Proactive release of information - Promoting the Effective Engagement of Disabled People in Policy Development and Service Design

The Minister of Disability Issues has proactively released three documents detailing an Oral Cabinet Item.

Dr Jonathan Godfrey as President of Blind Citizens along with the Social Investment Agency presented information on how disabled people had been engaged in consultation and the provision of advice to the Social Investment Agency in policy development.

This was used as an exemplar to present ideas on the expectations for consulting disabled people, effective engagement and consultation processes, the benefits of doing this effectively and that engagement needs to respect the diversity of disabled people.

An A3 document was presented to support the discussion.

The Cabinet Papers outline that:

  • Every policy decision and cabinet paper is an opportunity to make a difference for disabled people
  • Policy that works for disabled people works for all
  • Many New Zealanders are impacted by disabilities - we need to engage early and effectively
  • There is evidence of good practice which we can build on.
