Oranga Tamariki welcomes Disability Advisory Group

Disability issues and working to achieve great results for all New Zealanders, including disabled people is the responsibility of all government agencies, not just the Office for Disability Issues, or Whaikaha, the Ministry of Disabled People.

It was both moving and exciting to attend the pōwhiri for the newly established Disability Advisory Group for Oranga Tamariki.

The Advisory Group will support Claudia Boyles the Chief Advisor, Disability, to lead a significant shift in disability policies, practices and supports aligned to the New Zealand Disability Strategy, Whaia Te Ao Marama and the social model of disability.

A big mihi to Oranga Tamarki and the Advisory Group members Melanie (Mel) Ahnau, Claire Gyde (Chair), Crystal Kire, Hannah Watson, Arielle Lockheart and Ann-Madonna (Donna) Fasavalu.

Through lived experience, te mamae (pain), challenge, advocacy, wisdom and the passion of the individuals and collective of the Advisory Group, Oranga Tamariki will develop a better understanding of the approach and action required to support tamariki and rangatahi whaikaha as well as the well-being of disabled parents./caregivers.
