The NCEA Review: Thoughts from a disability perspective

Brian Coffey, Director of the ODI, shares his thoughts on the recent summit on the Review of the NCEA.

Late in July I attended a summit on the review of NCEA and witnessed the impact the views of disabled young people had on the proceedings. It was heartening to see their understanding and constructive comments in respect of the codesign of a system transformation becoming embedded in the process.

Kylie Hathaway, from Think Outside In and facilitator of the event, says “Without a doubt the biggest highlight was seeing the disabled young people join us.  They were absolutely outstanding: strong, spirited and in their own power. They shared their voice and ideas in a way that captured our audience, captured their hearts and reminded us all of the different challenges people face and the focus needed on all our young people. Their ideas and messages will stay with many as they have planted the seeds needed to allow different thinking and ideas to evolve.”
