NZSL Board meeting: 6 - 7 November 2018

The NZSL Board met on 6 and 7 November 2018 in which several topics were discussed. The NZSL Board Deputy Chair, Josje Lelijveld, provides us with an update.

What happened at the November NZSL Board meeting?

NZSL Strategy

The NZSL Strategy is now available in print. Copies can be requested from ODI.
The Board started work to develop targets and measures against which they will be able to measure progress against each of the five NZSL Strategy priorities. You can find out more about the strategy at https://www.odi.govt.nz/nzsl/nzsl-strategy-2018-2023/

Visitors

The Board welcomed Oliver Ferguson, President of the Deaf Aotearoa Executive Board, who explained Deaf Aotearoa’s organisational structure and Strategic Plan. The Deaf Aotearoa and NZSL Boards are keen to discuss further the idea of a Memorandum of Understanding. This would be a relationship agreement setting out common purposes, differences and how the Boards can work together.

The Board also welcomed Sacha O’Dea, Programme Lead, System Transformation, at the Ministry of Health. Sacha explained the approach being taken in the System Transformation work in the mid-central region. The Board is interested in how this will align with the priorities in the NZSL Strategy.

NZSL Board National Tour

A series of local meetings is being planned for April / May 2019 to give interested people a chance to meet Board members and find out more about the work of the Board. Community meetings will be held in several locations across New Zealand, including both city and rural areas. More details will be shared on this soon.

Advisor role

The Office for Disability Issues is currently advertising a permanent Advisor role for a second person to help with the Secretariat function for the NZSL Board. Applications close on 30 November.

NZSL Funding Round 5

The theme for this round will be Creative Connection. The Board will be interested in proposals linked to the NZSL Strategy priorities: Access/Use and Documentation. The criteria and opening/closing dates will be announced soon. No applications will be accepted outside the opening period.
