Action 5: Foster leading voices by people experiencing disability

Build the capacity of people experiencing disability to take responsibility for governing, managing, advising and delivering disability-specific and mainstream services.

Key steps:

  • Require agencies and services that access government funding to work actively to ensure that people experiencing disability are in governance and decision-making roles, and involved in monitoring and evaluation processes.
  • Resource the development of service providers and advocacy organisations run by and for people experiencing disability.
  • Recruit and develop a workforce that includes people experiencing disability in all the services that impact on them.
  • Strengthen the voice of people experiencing disability at the national level so they can make a fuller contribution to the development of legislation and policy.
  • Ensure that people who experience disability can take the central role in discussion of issues that personally affect them.
