06: “Our Stories” film fest.

"Our Stories" is a joint community development project  between IHC and CCS Disability Action, which aims to change people's attitudes towards disability and create opportunities for those living with disability in their local community.  It brings together the arts, business, disability groups, schools and communities to create new levels of awareness and dialogue.

A film fest to showcase 10 short documentaries made by local year 7 and 8 students who have spent a week getting to know local people from their community who live with disability.  The film fest is being held on 12 May in Blenheim and 13 May in Nelson.

07: Deaf Aotearoa New Zealand: Tangata Turi.

The Deaf Association has changed its name to Deaf Aotearoa New Zealand and adopted a new logo which incorporates the country's three different languages - English, Maori and Sign Language.  The butterfly logo was chosen as some varieties of butterflies are deaf. The new look has been launched in time for this year's Sign Language Week which runs from 4-10 May.

08: World Health Organisation endorses flour fortification guidelines.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued a statement endorsing guidelines for the fortification of flour with iron, folic acid, zinc, vitamin B12 and vitamin A.  Flour fortification is a health promotion measure to reduce the incidence of anaemia, heart disease and spina bifida.

09: Diversityworks: Request for volunteers for research on peer support May 2009.

Diversityworks is looking for disabled people, especially young people and family/whanau who would be willing to work with them to explore how disabled people can better use community-based relationships, virtual communication and socially innovative methods in their lives. The project is due to start in May 2009.

10: “Autism at School”: a video resource.

Autism at School is a video resource giving advice and tips for school children on the autism spectrum. The video has been developed in response to requests from teachers and parents.  Another video, Living with Autism has been produced for parents of newly-diagnosed children.

11: Attitude TV One: change to 10.00 am time.

Attitude's TV One screening has changed to 10.00am on Sundays. To view previous programmes go to www.tvnzondemand.co.nz.  Just visit the alphabetical list of shows and click on 'A' for Attitude. 

12: Maori Development Research Centre.

The Maori Development Research Centre is inviting whanau carers and whanau living with disability to contact them.  The Centre is currently researching these areas.
