15: Down Under Institute event - Hamilton: on 22-26 February 2009.

The Lifestyle Trust and Disability Resource Centre (Hawkes Bay) Trust are co-hosting an event in Hamilton from 22 to 26 February 2009, which aims to bring together people working actively on the complex issues of inclusion and diversity in communities, workplaces and schools.

It will be open to people who are involved with or part of any group that face barriers to inclusion within general society. This has a focus on, but is not exclusive to, disabled people. The number of open registrations for this event is limited.

16: Australian and New Zealand Communications (ANZC) Conference - Call for papers: 23 February 2009.

The Australian and New Zealand Communications (ANZC) Conference is being held in Brisbane, Australia, 8-10 July 2009. It has a Disability and Communication stream with the topic "New Directions in Creativity and Global Citizenship".

Contributions are being called for (but not limited to) topics such as:
- Where do critical conceptions of disability fit into current discourses of creativity?
- What are the new possibilities for justice, ethics and disability from changes in global citizenship (including the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities)?
- How do people with disabilities figure in contemporary media culture in Australia and New Zealand, and the Asia-Pacific region?
- What are the new cultures of disability to be found in digital technologies and environments, from Second Life, through mobiles, to digital broadcasting, and new media technologies of disability?
- How should media and communications studies and research respond to the new political and scholarly developments around disability in Australasia?

Final date for submission of abstracts is 23 February 2009.

17: Whose Life Is it Anyway? Conversations on Supported Living - Call for discussion topics: 27 February 2009.

This event aims to provide a forum for people to share and reflect where we are now in New Zealand with our understanding of supported living, and how can service providers better support people's lives. The forum is being held at the Te Papa in Wellington on 4 June 2009.

A call for a 300 word summary of discussion topics is requested by 27 February 2009.

18: Making Inclusive Education Happen Conference - Call for papers: 27 February 2009.

The conference is being held 28-30 September 2009 at Te Papa in Wellington. It will include discussion on:
- what we mean when we talk about inclusive education
- the values that underlie inclusive policies and practices in education
- children's rights, human rights, and social justice foundations for inclusive education
- the development of inclusive policy in education
- inclusive practices in relation to curriculum, reaching and learning, and teacher education.

Papers are now being called for on what is needed to make inclusive education happen, due by 27 February 2009. These may include:
- personal accounts and experiences from disabled children and adults
- families' perspectives and experiences
- the perspectives and experiences of teachers, principals and others working in education
- research on inclusive education and related topics.

19: Workshops on issues autistic children face - Autism New Zealand.

Autism New Zealand is conducting one day practical workshops designed to:
- support parents/carers/teaching staff in understanding their child's stress and help provide simple strategies to implement at home/school
- develop an understanding of the challenges children on the autistic spectrum face everyday in the social world.

Workshops are in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch, Wellington, starting in March 2009.

20: An Introduction to Social Role Valorisation: Auckland 26-27 March and 23-24 April 2009.

Brain Injury Auckland and Standards Plus are hosting two-day workshops for people wanting to gain a high level of understanding of the nature of valued roles for people in our communities who are disabled and disadvantaged, particularly as a result of brain injury. This event is suited to people who are searching for ideals, values and strategies to guide them in their own roles in the lives of people who are marginalised because of age, disabilities, mental illness or other factors which prevent them from pursuing ordinary roles in community life.

21: Working together across the lifespan rehabilitation conference: 21-25 July 2009.

This conference is focused on an interdisciplinary approach to rehabilitation. It is co-hosted by Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation (AFRM), the National Institute of Rehabilitation Research (NIRR-NZ) and the New Zealand Rehabilitation Association (NZRA) in Queenstown on 21-25 July 2009.

22: Anxiety - the silent disability: 23-25 July 2009.

The Phobic Trust's fifth international conference is focused on the social and economic cost of anxiety and phobic disorders. It aims to create awareness of the debilitating social consequences of this silent disability and the economic impact of the costs involved. It will be in Auckland from 23-25 July 2009.

23: Barrier Free Seminars 2009.

Barrier Free are running two day seminars around the country throughout 2009 that furthers training to become a Barrier Free Advisor on building accessibility.

24: Asia Pacific Autism Conference Sydney: 20-22 August 2009 (APAC 09).

APAC 09 will bring together people with an autism spectrum disorder, families and carers, educators, researchers, service providers and practitioners from across Australia and the Asia Pacific region. The conference has four streams:
-  epidemiology, causes and diagnosis
-  life span
-  family life, family functioning and family resilience
-  autism across Australia and the Asia Pacific region.
