Part Two: Current consultations

This is the Office's email update of 9 October 2008.

12: United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCROC).

New Zealand ratified UNCROC in 1993. Since then Government has submitted two periodic reports to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child in 1995 and 2000. New Zealand's third and fourth report to the UN Committee, is due in November 2008.

A draft report to the UN has been prepared which provides comprehensive information on relevant activity undertaken by the Government that directly responds to the UN Committee's recommendations.  It also provides updated information on legislation, policy and practice that furthers compliance with the Convention's obligations.  In addition, the Ministry of Social Development's 2008 report Children and Young People: Indicators of Wellbeing in New Zealand sets out the status of children and young people across a range of indicators.
UNCROC includes specific mention on children with disabilities.

Feedback is being sought on the draft report to the UN until 17 October 2008.
