09: New Zealand Post publishes trilingual education resource

In support of New Zealand Sign Language Week (May 5-11) New Zealand Post published a trilingual education resource it developed with members of the New Zealand Deaf and Maori communities, educators and students. Primarily aimed at year 7 and 8 students, “My Future Party” (http://www.nzpost.co.nz/) encourages futures thinking as students plan a birthday party in the year 2050.

It is believed that this resource brings together for the very first time New Zealand’s official languages –Te Reo Maori and New Zealand Sign Language, together with English for classroom learning.

10: Professor Mason Durie recognised for long-term commitment to mental health

Professor Mason Durie is the first New Zealander to be awarded the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists Mark Sheldon Prize for meritorious work in service provision and research to advance knowledge and understanding of indigenous mental health.

Professor Durie is Massey's Professor of Mäori Research and Development, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Mäori) and Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

11: Mental Health: "Let’s Get to Work"

The Mental Health Council of Australia, which is a national non-government organisation representing and promoting the interests of the Australian mental health sector, has compiled a report “Let’s Get to Work” with a strategy of increasing the employment rate for people with a mental illness from 29% to 53% by 2015, for all governments agencies, service providers and the community.

Auckland Disability Law is a free community legal service in the Auckland region.  It aims to help disabled people access legal services, and to increase awareness of disability law.
