NZ Application for the 2007 Franklin Delano Roosevelt International Disability Award
Conclusion
We are proud of the New Zealand disability system. We see it as having already made significant progress for people with disabilities. The disability community acknowledges that there is improved participation and inclusion - in people’s attitudes to those with disabilities, in access to services, and in tailoring services to meet needs of people with disabilities.
Our journey has yet to reach the destination of a fully integrated society, where people with disabilities can participate and be recognised on equal terms with other New Zealanders. But we believe that the New Zealand Disability Strategy and our systemic approach will impel us further towards our desired goal. Our success is not reliant any one measure; it has a momentum that is driven across government and more broadly across society by the New Zealand Disability Strategy and by people with disabilities themselves.
