The purpose of the NZSL Board is to promote and maintain NZSL by ensuring the development, preservation and acquisition of the language, and to provide expert advice to government and the community on NZSL.
This Strategy guides the work required by the NZSL Board from 2018 to 2023 to maintain and promote the use of NZSL by Deaf people and other NZSL users.
About 4000 to 7000 NZSL users are estimated to be Deaf people. The recognition of NZSL is a major step forward in improving the lives of Deaf people in New Zealand.
