July 2006 to June 2007

Forty-one government agencies (36 departments and five crown entities) have submitted work plans on how they intend to implement the NZ Disability Strategy, over the period 1 July 2006 to 30 June 2007.

This is the sixth year under the New Zealand Disability Strategy that implementation plans have been required to be submitted.

This is the fourth set of plans for which the Office for Disability Issues has been responsible for co-ordinating. The Office has worked closely with government agencies to continue to build understanding of the New Zealand Disability Strategy. Agencies have been encouraged to focus on activity that will make a real difference in the lives of disabled people.

This year, agencies have been encouraged to develop their plans using a more targeted approach. The Office has asked them to organise their activity into three areas, based upon their level of responsibility for outcomes relating to disabled people.

All agencies have been asked to promote a universal responsiveness to disability issues, ensuring they have the necessary internal knowledge, skills and systems to do so. Activities include the accessibility of public information, buildings and sites, and government services. Also, having responsive employment practices, and collecting information about disability.

Some agencies, particularly those who have general social policy responsibilities, have also been asked to plan towards ensuring a disability perspective is routinely considered within their ordinary work.

In addition, the government agencies who have key social policy responsibilities, in areas that have a significant impact on the lives of disabled people, have been asked to reflect this in their planning for the year.
