Research on Return to Sustainable Earnings To conduct research to ensure injured people are returning to sustainable work to the maximum extent practicable. The Research on Return to Sustainable Earnings was completed in July 2008 and it identified that:

• injured people were more likely not to return to work than the rest of the population

• when injured people did return they were likely to have a significant post-injury earnings loss.

Disability Survey To carry out a Disability Survey every five years after each Census. The information gathered will be used:

• to review the effectiveness of services for disabled people

• to help guide the development of new services.
Statistical and qualitative analysis of the data gathered from the Disability Survey has been carried out in partnership with the Office for Disability Issues. Information from this work is to be released in 2008/09 in six sub-reports covering a specific topic area that include Education, Employment, Transport, Māori and disability, Informal carers, and Unmet service needs.
Short Social Statistic surveys To use short disability surveys to gather more information about disabled people within the community, as part of the Programme of Official Social Statistics. Two new projects started in 2007/08 and planned for field testing in 2009 are:

• The Time Use Survey 2009/10 will involve respondents keeping a diary of all their activities over a continuous 48 hour period. Follow up questions of participants’ diaries will include questioning in regard to activities relating to “looking after someone else”.

• The Family Survey 2010/11 is targeting families with dependent children and will focus on family structure and support.
2011-Census New Zealand Disability Survey To consult with the disability sector on the planned re-design of the post 2011-Census New Zealand Disability Survey. A Disability Survey Reference Group has been established to ensure as wide a consultation as is possible. Submissions have been received from a number of government departments and agencies on disability information.

Cost of disability To research the cost of disability. An Overview Report on the Costs of Disability has been prepared, outlining the additional costs that disabled people face in order to live an ordinary life. It is currently in the final stages of preparation.Two literature reviews of international models and disability discrimination have also been drafted.
Living Standards Survey To improve our knowledge base about measuring economic standard of living of disabled people. Data collected in the Living Standards Survey 2004 was used to describe the economic standard of living of disabled people across a spectrum of disability severity for the whole working-age population and for subgroups defined by family type. The report is currently in draft.
Positive Ageing Indicators To undertake work on measuring the improvement of the situation for older people in New Zealand. Work is underway to develop Positive Ageing Indicators to measure the current status of older people’s living standards, and future improvements to their situation. The Indicators will be reported on every five years following each Census.

Five-year review of the New Zealand Disability Strategy implementation process. To report to the Minister for Disability Issues on the recommendations from the five-year review the New Zealand Disability Strategy implementation process. The five-year review of the implementation of the New Zealand Disability Strategy has been completed.

Widespread consultation with disabled people and disability sector organisations was undertaken and an independent contractor undertook in-depth interviews during July – October 2007. The report is available on the Office’s website.

NZ Sport and Physical Activity Survey To include disability related questions in a report on the New Zealand Sport and Physical Activity Survey 2007-2008. Questions on disabilities were included in the New Zealand Sport and Physical Activity Survey 2007-2008. Data from the survey has not been released.
