Recognising Achievers 2003
We would like to celebrate the good work organisations and people promoting the inclusion and visibility of people with disabilities. If you know of examples of good practice on disability, please let us know. Email your information to: odi@msd.govt.nz.
Disabled people
- Johnathan Mosen: has been awarded the Association of Blind Citizens' Beamish Memorial Medal on 4 October 2003. This is in recognition of his life-long contribution to blind issues on the national and international level, broadcasting and to organisations working and representing blind people.

Community and disability sector organisations
- Association of Blind Citizens: in July 2003 produced a report 'As We See It: Accessing New Zealand Via Non-Visual Means' on the current state of the nation for blind and vision impaired citizens, with recommendations for change.

Central government
- Transitions website: providing information on transition from school or tertiary education into the world of work, training and other activities. This site was developed by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with disability sector organisations, and was launched in September 2003.

Local government
- Wellington City Council: have appointed a permanent, full-time Disability Liaison person to promote disability issues in the Council and work with the disability community in Wellington. In In addition, the council is continuing with its commitment to hold annual disability forums involving disability sector organisations, disabled people and the Council. The forums are an opportunity to report back and discuss current issues.
Go to the Wellington City Council website - Auckland City Council: in July 2003, approved a framework providing direction on how the city can enable and encourage disabled people's contribution and participation. It is the result of a two-year partnership between the city and the disability sector.
Go to the Auckland City Council website - Whanganui-Manawatu Regional Council: have made improvements to make buses in Palmerston North wheelchair accessible. Near-new buses have been provided for all City routes at little extra cost to passengers. The new buses can 'kneel' and have a wheelchair access ramp.
