Do I have the right skills?
Use this checklist to see if you have the skills, knowledge and experience to be a member of a government board or committee.
Checklist
1. Do I have experience governing a business, community or relevant professional organisation?
This experience might include a position on one or more of the following:
- statutory board or committee
- private sector board of directors
- local or regional council
- regulatory body
- community trust
- community board
- iwi or runanga committee
- school board of trustees
- executive committee of a professional body
- church committee.
2. Do I have experience as a chief executive or senior manager in a business, community organisation or relevant professional organisation?
3. Have I been a chair or president of a community group?
4. Do I have the specialist qualifications and/or work experience?
Some boards or committees require specialist qualifications or experience in a profession. Typically these professions can include:
- lawyer
- chartered accountant
- banker
- company director
- engineer
- registered chiropractor (or other health professional)
- research scientist
- financial manager.
We do not normally nominate current public servants to government bodies, but past experience as a senior public servant can be valuable.
5. Do I have governance skills and knowledge?
For example:
- knowing the responsibilities of a director
- being a 'big picture' strategic thinker
- having financial literacy
- being socially and strategically aware
- being a team player
- having a high degree of common sense.
6. Do I have an impairment or personal experience of disability?
We are only looking for disabled people to nominate. By disabled people, we mean anyone, of any age, with vision, hearing, physical, or neurological impairments, people with experience of mental illness, or people with learning or intellectual disabilities.
Scoring your answers
If you have answered yes to three questions, including the disability question (question 6), then you may be a suitable candidate for a board appointment. If you are not sure, contact us.
